Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (12A) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-10 15:00 Posted by ...
Based on Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic book of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World follows the eponymous slacker rocker on his colourful quest to defeat his dream girl's seven evil exes. Twenty-two-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) may not have a job, but rocking the bass for his band, Sex Bob-Omb, is a tough job in itself. When Scott locks eyes with Ramona V. Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), he knows she's the girl he wants to grow old with. But Ramona has some serious baggage; her supercharged exes rue the thought of her being with another man, and they'll crush any guy who gives her a second glance. Now, in order to win Ramona's heart, Scott will do battle with everyone from vegan-powered rock gods to sinister skateboarders, never losing sight of his gorgeous goal as he pummels his way to victory. Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright, working without usual collaborator Simon Pegg, directs the film from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall. Superhero veterans Chris Evans and Brandon Routh co-star in the action comedy as two of the seven ex-boyfriends. Wright also recruited Beck to write original songs for Pilgrim's band, while artists such as Metric and Broke

The Girl Who Played With Fire (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-10 14:15 Posted by ...
For any of you who haven't read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, or who missed seeing the previous instalment of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, The Girl Who Played With Fire conveniently opens with a summing-up and introduction to our heroine Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and the gruesome acts of revenge she took in her first outing. Mikael Blomkvist, crusading journalist and publisher of the magazine 'Millennium', has decided to run a story that will expose an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden, implicating well known and highly-placed members of Swedish society, business, and government. But he has no idea just how explosive the story will be until, on the eve of publication, the two investigating reporters are murdered. And even more shocking for Blomkvist: the fingerprints found on the murder weapon belong to Lisbeth Salander - the troubled, wise-beyond-her-years genius hacker who came to his aid in the first of the series, and who now becomes the focus and fierce heart of The Girl Who Played with Fire. As Blomkvist, alone in his belief in Salander's innocence, plunges into an investigation of the slayings, Salander herself is drawn in

The Maid (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-10 12:30 Posted by ...
For more than 20 years, Raquel (Catalina Saavedra) has worked as the hired help for an upper-class Santiago family, the Valdezes, but her tireless devotion has started to wear thin. She begins suffering from painful migraines and sudden fainting spells. But when the Valdezes propose hiring a second maid to relieve Raquel of some of her responsibilities, she takes it as a declaration of war. One by one the reinforcements arrive, only to meet the full force of Raquel's passive-aggression. Au pair Mercedes is locked out of the house and Raquel violently scours the bathroom after she showers until the young Peruvian girl runs away in tears. Her replacement, a grizzled lifer, puts up more of a fight - literally - only to eventually head for the hills. But the third time proves something like a charm in the form of Lucy (Mariana Loyola), who is either immune to Raquel's offensives or, perhaps, a little bit crazy herself. When Raquel tries the old bathroom-scouring routine on her, Lucy responds by giving her a tearful bear hug; when Raquel locks her out, she seizes the opportunity for some impromptu nude sunbathing on the lawn. Saavedra goes through one of the most uncanny psychophysica

Certified Copy (tbc) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-10 12:00 Posted by ...
For his first fiction film shot outside his native Iran, Abbas Kiarostami turns his focus on an unlikely couple who meet and spend a few hours together in a small Tuscan village. An English writer (William Shimmel) arrives to give a reading from his recent bestseller. He is interrupted by a French woman (Juliette Binoche) in the audience who is trying to manage her impatient teenage son. When the couple meet again, they decide to spend the day together, exploring the neighbouring countryside. Slowly we begin to wonder, have they been on this journey before? Are they a reliving a past relationship or just flirting with a potential one? A director in complete control, Kiarostami expertly moves the two actors around the board like chess pieces. Binoche, who won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her work here, is paired with Shimmel, a well-known opera singer in his first traditional acting role, who holds his own against an actress very much at the top of her game. Despite the description, Certified Copy is not remotely a dry intellectual exercise. For one thing, it looks beautiful, bathed in a warm, golden Tuscan glow. And there's a playfulness to the film, from the script to th

However, its his wife Maggies impact that really sends his career soaring and as explained in the play itself, every woman knows that behind every successful man there is a woman pulling the strings - a fact that is unknown to John until the plays conclusion. The Secret in Their Eyes (18) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-9 17:00 Posted by ...
While all the bookies were favouring The White Ribbon or A Prophet for this year's Foreign Language Academy Award, a little known Argentinean thriller walked away with the prize. The Secret In Their Eyes is a rare breed these days - a perfectly constructed whodunit of which even Hitchcock would have been proud. Brimming with tension, passion and pathosas well, this film will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very final moment. Benjamin Esposito is a criminal-court investigator, tormented by the unsolved rape and murder of a young bride in 1974. Benjamin and Sandoval (the superb Guillermo Francella), his alcoholic partner, work with the victim's husband Ricardo (Pablo Rago) to try and identify the killer. In a thunderously exciting chase scene through a Buenos Aires stadium during a heated soccer match, Benjamin and Sandoval hunt their suspect, only to find him given shelter by the corrupt government of the new Argentina. 25 years later, the retired Benjamin has begun to write a novel about his experience in an effort to resolve his feelings about the case and also for Judge Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil). The excellent cast is led by the strongly centred Ric

Video and performance artist Andrew Kotting follows up his fiction feature debut, This Filthy Earth, with an intriguing film inspired by his own childhood, when he used to hide up in the trees due to his difficult relationship with his father. In the French countryside, an eccentric family lives in asprawling manor house. Remote and isolated, it is surrounded by a mysterious forest. Freya, the eldest daughter, is getting ready to leave for Russia, and her imminent departure has affected her brother Alex strongly. As their relationship intensifies in her last days, father Andrei intervenes and banishes Alex from the house. Alex, feeling wrongly accused, climbs up on the roof of the house and refuses to ever come down again. At first, the family thinks it's just a game, but Alex is stubborn. He begins to live in exile, looking down from on high at the family he loves falling apart. By using a small cast of professional and non-professional actors, Kotting successfully creates a world of magic realism, though still very grounded in the minute details of the ordinary everyday. And his unique visual style, mixing archival footage with material shot on HD, lends itself perfectly to thi

Mother (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-9 14:30 Posted by ...
Mother, Bong Joon-Ho's follow-up to The Host, is a more subtle, yet no less visceral horror-comedy, fully worthy of its primal title. A tense melodrama which hinges on a phenomenal central performance from TV star Kim Hye-ja, Mother is also filled with the elegant compositions and mood-drenched cinematography which are becoming Bong's specialty. Comparisons with Hitchcock's Vertigo will spring to mind immediately, not only in the way the narrative is structured, but because of the wonderfully operatic musical score which underlines the story. Hye-ja is an older single mother, overprotective, always with an eye on her son, Do-joon (Won Bin). Even though he's 27, he behaves like a child, forgets what he has said from one minute to the next, and seems to have little sense of everyday dangers. When Do-joon is accused of a local girl's murder, Hye-ja refuses to believe the accusation. Convinced that her son is harmless, she determines to prove his innocence and investigates the case herself, learning more about the schoolgirl's personal life and identifying alternative suspects. Along the way, her own past reappears to haunt her. By casting Kim (best known in South Korea for playing

Fish Tank is the newest film by British filmmaker Andrea Arnold. Like Red Road, Arnold turns her gaze on the quiet desperation of ordinary people. A grim but beautifully crafted story of a young teenager, isolated and ignored, whose life is changed by a mysterious stranger. Mia (played by newcomer Katie Jarvis, an incredible find) is a sullen 15-year-old truant who spends her days drinking and dancing to hip-hop in an abandoned apartment on her council estate. She lives with her harassed mother (Kierston Wareing) and precocious younger sister Tyler in the flat below. A ray of sunshine comes into this depressing world when her mother brings her new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender from Hunger) into the household. The attraction between him and Mia is immediately palpable, despite Mia's initially hostile attitude. But as their relationship develops, it sets in motion a chain of events which no one will expect.

Exhibition open to the public from 3 September to 6 November. 'Sketching the Universe', a new exhibition in the Lamb Gallery of artistic responses to D'Arcy Thompson. From major figures of 20th-century modernism such as Henry Moore, Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi to today's students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, the exhibition covers a wide range of media and styles, all linked by D'Arcy's writings and collections. Accompanying this in the Tower Foyer Gallery will be an exhibition of prints by the celebrated abstract artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham which reveal the influence of D'Arcy Thompson's classic book On Growth & Form on her work. While many of her contemporaries in the 1930s, 40s and 50s were also drawing on D'Arcy's work for inspiration, Barns-Graham (born in St Andrews) was the only one who actually met the great man. The material in the exhibition is being kindly loaned to us by the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust.

Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-2 19:30 Posted by ...
At the same time as Anne Fontaine's biopic Coco Before Chanel went into production, Jan Kounen was developing his own version of the fashion icon's story. Picking up where last year's box office smash left off, Kounen's film concentrates on the affair between two iconoclastic figures of their day - Coco Chanel and the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Although the public rioted at the disastrous premiere of Stravinsky's controversial "The Rite of Spring" in 1913, his work certainly made a positive impression on one person, a young Coco Chanel. A decade later, the now successful Coco (Anna Mouglalis) invites the genius Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen), living in squalid exile with his wife and family, to move into her country estate. The affair which ensued would shape both their lives and careers forever. The screenplay (from Chris Greenhalgh's novel) concentrates almost exclusively on the illicit relationship; music and fashion provide the context. Mouglalis plays Coco as a strong but hardened woman, shaped as much by her personal failures as her business success. Mikkelsen (last seen at DCA in Valhalla Rising), who learnt both French and Russian for the role, is suitably intense. Th

This lecture by Professor Martin Kemp, one of the most renowned art historians, will sample the diversity of these motifs, as part of the ongoing celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Dundee pioneer of life sciences, Professor D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson. The people involved range from the notorious dripper Jackson Pollock to the engineer Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup. The lecture will be followed by the opening of Sketching the Universe, a new exhibition in the Lamb Gallery of artistic responses to D'Arcy Thompson.

The Illusionist (PG) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-9-2 14:30 Posted by ...
Fresh from the Edinburgh Film Festival, where it was the gala opening film, The Illusionist is the new animated film by Sylvain Chomet, based on a never-realised script by Jacques Tati. There is no better man than Chomet to bring Tati's story of the last days of music hall to life. Indeed, his first film, Belleville Rendezvous, paid respectful homage to Tati's Jour de fete, and Chomet's style of caricature is perfectly suited to capturing Tati's subtle humour. Set in the early fifties, The Illusionist tells the story of an ageing magician, Tatischeff, touring through Scotland with his magic show. After a rather disastrous outing in the Hebrides, the magician sets off for Edinburgh, accompanied by a runaway teenage girl he has befriended. Although he struggles to earn a living, this unlikely pair quickly becomes a harmonious but very platonic couple. Sadly, we all know it is inevitable that this happiness cannot last, and that eventually his protege will grow up and move away. Like Tati, Chomet's characters are defined by the way they look and act rather than what they say. Dialogue is virtually non-existent - Tatischeff mumbles in French, the young woman from the Northern Isles

Went The Day Well? (PG) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-8-29 13:45 Posted by ...
Few war films were as daring as Ealing Studios' Went the Day Well? Director Cavalcanti brought the fight right to the doorsteps of wartime audiences by depicting nothing less than the Nazi invasion of Britain. From the swift dispatch of the hopelessly unprepared Home Guard, the body count steadily rises, and as the plucky English villagers have to rally together to save their community, the film seems like an Ealing comedy gone badly wrong. Years later, Cavalcanti would describe this as a pacifist film: "People of the kindest character...as soon as war touches them, become absolute monsters." The villagers fight back with shocking barbarity - the women in particular (including a wisecracking young Thora Hird) are soon gunning the Nazis down or caving their skulls in with an axe. The War Office certainly wasn't impressed by such brutal scaremongering, and refused to support the film, but it stands today as one of the finest cinematic achievements of the Second World War.

Discovery Family Film Club: The Illusionist (PG) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-8-29 12:00 Posted by ...
A French magician is touring Scotland in the late 1950s. From the Hebrides to Edinburgh he looks for people who will still delight in rabbits pulled from hats and tricks with cards...but times are changing, and the audiences want a bit more rock 'n' roll. On his way, he is befriended by a teenage girl who believes that surely anything is possible if you are friends with a magician? Most of the story unfolds on the streets of Edinburgh, so there is added fun in looking out for places you might recognise. Based on a script by the famous director and mime Jacques Tati, this is an enchanting tale. Fun workshop before the film on Sat 28 August at 12.00 in the DCA Activity Room.

Cinema Republic: Blue Velvet (18) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-8-25 19:00 Posted by ...
Suggested by our Twitter followers @ultramagic, @ManilaChinchila and @mcgoffic to mark the sad occasion of Dennis Hopper's death in May, an always-welcome screening of Blue Velvet provides the opportunity to see Hopper at his very best. Although just shy of a quarter-century old, Blue Velvet has lost none of its power to shock and intrigue. Its dreamlike timelessness and its blend of purest innocence with basest malevolence still combine to provoke deeply uneasy curiosity about what goes on behind the closed doors and in the minds of our neighbours. Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) discovers a severed ear, and is led by his amateur investigations into a hitherto unknown world of rage, violence and sadomasochistic sex. At the heart of this world, and the greatest of the film's dark pleasures, is Hopper's Frank Booth, a sociopathic monster who brutalises those around him in any way he can. The role revitalised Hopper's career after a decade and a half of mostly troughs, and while he might never have reached these heights again, Blue Velvet remains an undeniable testament to an actor of immense talent.

Women Without Men (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Inspired by Shahrnoush Parsipour's novel of the same name, Women Without Men, the first feature by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat (Shoja Azari receives the unusual credit of 'collaborating director') won the Silver Lion for Best Director at last year's Venice Film Festival. A stunning achievement, this multi-layered work follows the interwoven, tragic paths of four women in Iran during the summer of 1953, when political upheaval stirred by Western power plays resulted in the fall of democracy and the fanning of religious fundamentalism. Fledgling political activist Munis (Shabnam Toloui) lives with a brother who browbeats her about her failure to conform to religious dictates; bone-thin, dead-eyed Zarin (Orsolya Toth) works in a brothel for a brutal madam before running away; the devout Faezeh (Pegah Ferydoni) dreams of nothing but marriage until an act of violence forces her to re-evaluate her life; and unhappily married Farrokhlagha (Arita Shahrzad) flees from her marriage to a boorish army officer after a past love - a cultured man - returns to her life. Audience members familiar with Neshat's earlier shorts or photography will recognise her signature visual virtuosity and compl

Heartbreaker (15) @ Dundee Contemporary Arts Cinema

Publish date: 2010-8-25 12:30 Posted by ...
A huge box office hit in France now slated for an English language remake, Heartbreaker is a breezy rom-com about Alex (Romain Duris), a professional seducer, who is given a job that, this time, might just break his heart. The film makes it clear from the start that Alex will only offer his services in situations where a relationship has become destructive. His first target is a woman whose low self-esteem sees her unable to break away from her unfaithful man. She instantly falls for Alex who is posing as a bleeding-heart aid worker surrounding himself with underprivileged children and shedding a tear for their plight. But it's his fun-loving nature that draws in his next assignment, Juliette (Vanessa Paradis), though she resists initially, taking her vow to marry the lovely Englishman Jonathan (Love Actually's Andrew Lincoln) very seriously. Soon though, Juliette faces the classic romantic comedy dilemma: should she choose the boring nice guy or the mysterious fun guy? Duris, better known for his dramatic roles (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), subtly offsets Alex's arrogance with a touch of goofiness, and deftly handles the emotional moment when he realises he might just have
