The worlds of exploration, higher education, biotechnology, and business strategy are to be honoured by the University of Abertay Dundee this week.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE, world-famous explorer, Dr Chris Masters, former chairman of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman and managing director of Biocon, and Professor Dave Ulrich, Professor of Business at the University of Michigan will all receive honorary doctorates at Abertay's summer graduation ceremonies.

Described as the world's greatest living explorer by the Guinness Book of Records, Ranulph Fiennes has also variously been a soldier, adventurer, charity fund-raiser, author, and scholar. He was the first man to visit both the North and South Poles, and to cross Antarctica, entirely on foot, unsupported. In 2003, just weeks after suffering a massive heart attack, he ran seven marathons in seven days on seven continents.

He has raised huge sums for charity, including £4 million for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and £1.5 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care. He has received the Explorers Club of New York Medal, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society's Livingstone Gold Medal, the Royal Geographical Society's Founder's Medal, and the Polar Medal. This week, Abertay will award Sir Ranulph an Honorary Doctorate of Science.

Chris Masters FRSE is chairman of Sagentia AG, a technology consulting and development company based in Cambridge. After graduating in chemistry at King's College London, he achieved a PhD at Leeds University, and then held a series of increasingly senior posts with the Shell Group, Christian Salvesen, and Aggreko plc, retiring in 2002. He currently holds a number of non-executive director roles, including the Festival City Theatres Trust in Edinburgh, Alliance Trust plc, British Assets Trust plc, the Crown Agents, the Wood Group plc and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Previous non-executive appointments have included Scottish Widows, the Babtie Group and SMG plc.

From 1998 until 2005, he was chairman of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, guiding the higher education sector through the early years of devolution and the development of a distinctive Scottish university funding system. Dr Masters will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education from Abertay this week.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is chairman and managing director of Biocon, one of India's leading and most influential biotechnology companies. Daughter of a brewing engineer, Dr Mazumdar-Shaw studied zoology at university in her home city of Bangalore, followed by a postgraduate degree in malting and brewing in Australia.

Ignoring advice that biotechnology would be ‘too rough a job for a woman', Dr Mazumdar-Shaw went into partnership in 1977 with the founder of Biocon, and over the last 30 years has transformed the company into a world leader in enzyme production and drug development. As well as running Biocon, she is also runs the Biocon Foundation which helps to bring about social inclusion of economically weak communities in rural and urban areas. Abertay is awarding Dr Mazumdar-Shaw an Honorary Doctorate of Technology.

Dave Ulrich is Professor of Business Administration in the Ross Business School at the University of Michigan. He was born in Nevada and studied at the universities of California in Los Angeles and Brigham Young in Utah, where he now has a permanent home. As well as his role at Michigan, Dave is also a founder and partner with the RBL Group - a consulting firm focussed on helping organisations and leaders deliver value.

Listed in Forbes Magazine as one of the "World's Top 5" business coaches, Dave has published 12 books and more than 100 articles on human resources and strategic management. He spends much of his time travelling around the world and speaking on human resource management, and last year HR Magazine described him as the most influential person in human resources. He has won numerous and awards and prizes, to which Abertay will be adding an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration.
