Travelling to Dundee

By Rail

Dundee is on the main East Coast route with direct services to Newcastle, York and London, and to Carlisle, Preston, Coventry, Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Reading, Southampton, Bournemouth and Plymouth. There are overnight sleeper services from London, the south coast and the west country. Rail journeys to the other major cities in Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow) take approximately 1 1/4hrs, and the regular service from London King's Cross takes only six hours. The railway station is only a few minutes walk from the University campus and a short taxi ride from Ninewells Hospital & Medical School and Gardyne Road Campus. The railway station at Kirkcaldy is adjacent to the Kirkcaldy campus.

By Coach

Day and night coach services (operated by National Express, Stagecoach Group, and Scottish Citylink) are available to major cities throughout the UK including London.

Dundee's main bus station is on Seagate, approximately 10 minutes walk from the main University of Dundee campus. Edinburgh's main bus station is on St Andrews Square and Waterloo Place - a two minute walk from Waverley Railway Station and Glasgow's Buchanan Street bus station is a five minute walk from Queen Street Railway station.

By Car

Dundee is linked to the rest of the UK by continuous motorway and dual carriageway - all the way from Devon and Cornwall. Dundee is best approached from the south via the A90 for traffic coming from Edinburgh (M90) and Glasgow (A9) and beyond. From the outskirts of Dundee the route into the University and the Medical School is well signposted and relatively easy to follow. Ninewells Hospital and Medical School is a prominent landmark on the approach to Dundee via the A90. There is also a scenic route from Edinburgh along the Fife coastline and into Dundee via the Tay Road Bridge.

Directions from Edinburgh Airport:

Travel Time about 90 minutes.

Start out going Northwest on Turnhouse Road. Turn right onto Meadowfield Road. Turn right onto Craigs Road for 0.5 miles. Turn left onto Maybury Road, pass through 1 roundabout, turn slight left onto Whitehouse Road and slight left onto Queensferry Road (A90). Stay straight to go onto M90. Turn slight right onto A90 and follow directions below from Perth.

Directions from Perth:

Travel Time about 40 minutes.

From the A90 go Northeast for approximately 16 miles. At the first roundabout on the approach to Dundee and take the third exit on your right (Riverside Drive). Continue along Riverside Drive (A85) for about one mile until you reach the next roundabout. Take the first exit (up a steep hill). To get to Ninewells Hospital & Medical School follow the road to the left, take the second exit at the roundabout, followed by a first left into the hospital. To reach the city campus, take the first right onto the Perth Road (follow signs for Invercarse Hotel). Continue along the Perth Road until you reach traffic lights. Turn right at the lights (still the Perth Road). Continue on this road and you will pass Duncan of Jordanstone College, the Tower Building and other University buildings on your left.

Directions from Aberdeen:

Travel Time about 1 hour.

From the A90 continue straight ahead past the B974 turn off, the A926 turn off and the A929 turn off. Turn to your left when you get to the Forfar road and continue then take a left turn into North Marketgait. Take a left onto the East Port Roundabout then take a left to South Marketgait. Take the left onto Nethergate, leading to the Perth Road. The Tower Building will be on your right-hand side. For Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, continue along the Perth Road for approximately 4 miles. Take the second exit at the roundabout, then a left into the Hospital campus.

Directions from Dundee Airport:

Travel Time about 5 minutes.

From Riverside Drive (A85) turn left out of the airport. When you reach the roundabout take the third exit (up a steep hill). To get to Ninewells Hospital & Medical School follow the road to the left, take the second exit at the roundabout, followed by a first left into the hospital. To reach the city campus, take the first right onto the Perth Road (follow signs for Invercarse Hotel). Continue along the Perth Road until you reach traffic lights. Turn right at the lights (still the Perth Road). Continue on this road and you will pass Duncan of Jordanstone College, the Tower Building and other University buildings on your left.

Taxis are available from the Airport, and car hire may be pre-arranged. Free car parking is available to all ScotAirways passengers at Dundee Airport.

Please note that car parking on the city campus is by permit only. Visitors arriving by car should contact the department they are visiting to arrange a temporary permit. Pay as you leave parking is available at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School. Car parking at Gardyne Road and Kirkcaldy campuses are both free of charge.

By Air

Dundee airport is 3 miles to the west of the city centre (only five minutes drive from the University). Taxis are available at the airport, and care hire may be pre-arranged. Free car parking is available to all ScotAirways passengers. There are scheduled flights to and from London City with ScotAirways. All flights connect with many other international destinations. Travel by Sea

There are daily ferry services direct from Zeebrugge (Belgium) to Rosyth (near Edinburgh) operated by Superfast Ferries.

You can reach Dundee in a few hours from the European ferry terminals at Newcastle (3 hours by car to Dundee) and Hull (6 hours by car to Dundee). Dundee is also a popular port of call for cruise ships, and there are many harbours in Fife and Angus suitable for mooring yachts.

Travelling by sea from Northern Ireland to Scotland has never been easier. There are up to nine crossings a day from Belfast to Stranraer with Stena Line's high speed ferries. P&O Irish Sea ferries travel from Larne - Cairnryn daily and Hover Speed travels from Belfast to Troon 3 times daily.
